The label belongs to the individual garment

A thin merino layer may be pure wool or a blend. Reinforcement, stretch fibres, and prints can alter care requirements. Read the actual label rather than extending a general statement about merino to every shirt or sweater.

icebreaker's current general guidance includes cool gentle washing and avoiding bleach and softener, while referring users to individual labels. Use that as a starting point and compare it with your garment instead of importing an older procedure for another item.

Prepare and wash appropriately

Empty pockets and secure approved closures as directed. Wash similar colours together and turn inside out where recommended. Avoid combining fine knitwear with coarse heavily soiled items whose abrasion or fasteners may impose unnecessary wear.

Choose programme, temperature, and cleaner by the label. A mild suitable product does not need excessive dosage. A wool programme does not approve machine washing when the garment specifies otherwise. Check for previous softener residue in the drawer too.

Treat marks gently with compatible methods. Hard rubbing at a small wet area can alter the knit. A persistent stain does not justify replacing the care instructions with hotter water. Resolve compatibility before applying an uncertain product.

Support wet fabric

Support the garment when removing it rather than lifting by one sleeve. Remove water only as permitted and avoid forceful twisting. Ease it into shape without using strong stretching to correct a changed wet outline.

Dry by the stated method, such as flat in shade where specified. One pair of socks' dryer permission does not extend to every merino sweater. Check thicker cuffs and collar before folding; superficial dryness may not describe the whole garment.

Store clean

icebreaker recommends clean folded storage. Heavy knitwear hanging from a narrow hanger receives different stress from a folded item. Choose a clean dry place and enclose only fully dried clothing. Inspect stored garments before reuse.

Small holes, open seams, and substantial pilling are separate care questions. Do not cut randomly into the knit or pull fibres out. Use material-appropriate repair guidance. The routine preserves shape and an understandable condition without treating merino as a promise of unlimited durability or universal washability. Keep the label readable or record its instructions before repeated wear makes it harder to interpret.
