A suspended back uses tensioned mesh against the body with a gap behind it before the main bag. A contact system instead places padding closer to the pack itself; ventilation channels may run between the pads. Makers combine these constructions differently. The label alone does not establish where a particular model will touch your back.
deuter describes both the air gap of suspended mesh and ventilated contact areas within its back-system range. Neither description guarantees a dry back. Clothing, weather, movement, and the load also matter. Comparing the complete shape is more useful than searching for a system that promises to eliminate perspiration.
The internal shape can change
A strongly curved suspension may alter the useful shape of the compartment. A flat lunch box or a broad folder can fit differently even when the stated capacity looks suitable. Examine the space directly behind the backpanel, where dense items may need to sit without hard edges pressing against the support.
A contact design may offer a straighter interior, but not necessarily. Frame shape, padding thickness, and additional compartments matter too. Put the same equipment in both comparison packs. Looking inside an empty bag does not fully reveal the effect of its back curvature.
Contact matters more than the slogan
Try both models with comparable loads. Notice where the mesh or padding touches and whether the pack remains stable as you move. A promising ventilation gap is of little use when the shoulder straps do not fit. Equally, a simple padded design may work well for your lightly loaded day bag.
Include the clothes you normally wear. A smooth rain shell and a thick wool layer change the feel of the same suspension. Check whether the grab handle is accessible and whether the frame becomes awkward when putting the pack down. Ventilation is one property among several, rather than the entire buying decision.
Make the choice concrete
Choose the model whose back shape, harness, and interior work together. If you frequently carry broad rigid objects, pay particular attention to the packing shape. If you prefer an air gap, still assess the loaded fit. Avoid comparing different brands' promotional percentages as though they came from identical conditions. Your own contents make the differences more tangible.
